Purchasing A Sugar Glider

Sugar Gliders are lovable animals who you can bond with and become loyal friends for life. This is the very reason there is such an interest in having one as a pet. However they can still be considered an “Exotic” pet by many.. Not just any pet store will have these wonderful creatures for sale.  Sugar Glider sales can be challenging unless you prepare properly.

Since the Internet is such an easy place to find things many people turn to it for help in buying their new pet. Unfortunately it is very easy to be misled by unethical dealers. While many sites are legitimate and a great place to find a quality pet. There are many sites that you should be wary of.

Fortunately it is pretty easy to tell the difference between good sellers and a less than honest one. Always be wary of a site offering to ship your sugar glider pet to an airport near you. This is never a good way to get a pet. It is much better to physically see the pet that will be purchased before you actually buy it. Pictures can be deceiving and unfortunately the type of people that would do this have no problem deceiving you. Even speaking to them over the phone is really no replacement for actually seeing the animal for yourself. Fortunately there are dedicate breeders out there who really care for the pet and want them to go to good homes and are willing to do what it takes to be sure the sugar glider is personally carried out to you. With this kind of dedication to the breed you know you have a good breeder. A dedicated breeder knows how hard it is to find good breeding stock that is not coming from the same gene pool. This kind of dedication shows a love for the animal and a desire that they be placed properly in loving homes. Shipping baby sugar gliders, especially by air freight, alone or in small groups is very stressful and many have died in this type of shipping.

Another question many new owners have is how many should be purchased at a time. In the wild sugar gliders are very social creatures and will live in groups of 10 to 15 animals. This social quality is what makes them great pets. Many times you will be told you need to purchase 2 gliders for them to be happy. This is not always the case but can be a good idea depending on the time you have to devote to your pet. While it is true sugar gliders are social creatures and most social creatures have a desire to be with others like themselves. When properly bonded you can become that companion they desire if you are willing to spend the time it takes.

Always remember in sugar glider sales you want to purchase your new joey between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks. Anyone in legitimate sales will know that this is the age when gliders bond best and will want the glider to have a good bond with their new family. Colonies in the wild are between 10 to 15 gliders and bonding instinctively begins at about 8 weeks old. Since this bonding is a natural occurrence it transfers well to the new human family at this time in the gliders life.
